About
Sword Fern Nutrition is dedicated to providing mental-health focused nutrition care in a client-centered way, using the art and science of food as medicine.
We practice from a size-inclusive, trauma-informed, and identity-affirming perspective, celebrating the natural diversity of the human body and mind. We take pride in our harm reduction and nonjudgmental approach, prioritizing encouragement and personalization over perfectionism and shame.
Instead of calorie-counting and restrictive diets, our practice encourages dietary patterns that are diverse, sustainable, and flexible. We believe that thoughtful nutrition has the power to improve everything from our mood, to our ability to focus, to the quality of our sleep, our energy levels, our digestion, and so much more.
As a functional nutrition practice, we are uniquely suited to support our clients in a more holistic way, personalizing recommendations to address complex health challenges using a root-cause approach. Food relationship
Nutritional Psychology is the scientific study of the relationship between specific nutrients and brain health, with special focus on the roles that common nutrient deficiencies, poor digestion, food allergies, and other dietary factors may play in causing or exacerbating mental health challenges.

As a formal field of study, Nutritional Psychology is relatively new, with new research coming out in real-time from high-profile laboratories around the world. Part of what makes this field so exciting is the opportunity for cross-pollination across different areas of research with nutrition, neuroscience, psychology, physiology, and biochemistry all contributing in important ways.
While historically relegated to the domain of cardiometabolic medicine, it is now understood that nutrition is fundamental to both physical and mental health. A balanced diet not only supplies the necessary nutrients for optimal bodily functions but also serves as the foundation for neurotransmitters, enzymes, and hormones crucial to mental health and cognitive function.

This paradigm shift offers an alternative and complementary new tool for mental health that is empowering, provides numerous other health benefits, and can be used in combination with talk- and pharmacotherapy to dramatically improve clinical outcomes.
